● The leatherleaf mahonia, Mahonia bealei, is a dual-threat Prepper plant that can be used for protection and to attract wildlife. With its thick razor-sharp leaves, you can use the leatherleaf mahonia to protect your property line or you can plant it around things you want to hide.
It is an evergreen that will keep your protected 24/7, 365 days a year. Also, deer eat its bright blue berries, as well as its flowers and new soft growth (but not the thick mature growth). Leatherleaf mahonia shrubs also attract birds, which could be used as fresh meat. The dual use aspect of the mahonia makes it a tree that Preppers should certainly plant on their property.

● The leatherleaf mahonia shrub is great for growing in a shady location in USDA zones 6 through 9. The leaves are extremely thick and have sharp needle-like spines, which provide protection. A beautiful yellow flower stalk shoots up in late winter or early spring, followed by blueish-purple berries that form clusters and attract various types of wildlife. It is an upright-growing shrub that has multiple stalks and forms a massive clump, reaching a height of five to ten feet with a spread of three to four feet. You should plant the mahonia shrubs two feet apart if trying to hide something or if using it as a property line protector. Site location is in part shade to full shade as it will not take full sun. It is drought tolerant and very adaptable to soil conditions, so clay, sand, loam, acidic, or alkaline are all just fine.
