● Native American persimmon trees are extremely cold tolerant, growing in USDA zones 4 through 9. Site location for this deciduous fruit tree should include full sun to light shade, and it prefers well-drained soil. Once established, the persimmon is also drought tolerant. Common persimmon trees reach a height of 30 to 50 feet at maturity, with a spread of 20 to 35 feet; they produce a smaller fruit than the Japanese persimmon, which reaches a width of about two inches wide when ripe. Persimmons are a tap-rooted plant that grows deep, rather than a plant with a fibrous root system that produces more of a root ball. American persimmon trees are better for this reason, as a container-grown American persimmon's root ball could easily be root bound, whirling around the pot, which results in the plant not surviving more than a couple of years. We grow and ship our common persimmons bare-root for this reason and supply fruiting-age plants.
- American persimmon trees have a legacy of great medicinal uses dating back to the Civil War and even further back to use by Native Americans. There has also been major scientific research which shows that the skin of American persimmon fruit is high in antioxidants and has anti-tumor properties that help with leukemia. Persimmon fruit can also be used to make a hot herbal remedy to treat sore throat caused by cold or flu. Additionally, a decoction from persimmon bark is used to treat hemorrhoids, and a herbal tea from the bark is used to treat thrush and fevers. The recipes to unleash the medically beneficial properties of the American persimmon are listed below the USDA Zone Map.
- American persimmons are a favorite among white-tailed deer, who will find and eat fresh persimmon fruit right off the ground in the fall and winter months. Deer love the sweet persimmon taste and you will definitely increase your meat supplies by planting American persimmons. Wild turkey, raccoons, and game birds are some other forms of wildlife that are attracted to the orange fruit. If you have fruit left over, you can use it as feed for chicken and cows, too.
- There are many ways that you can enjoy the persimmon fruit, assuming you have any left over. Persimmon pudding is a favorite and is absolutely delicious to eat, with its perfectly sweet flavor. The fruit can be dried like a prune and, if stored in a Mylar bag, could last for years upon years because of its high sugar content. You can also use the seeds to produce coffee if you run out of your Starbucks stockpile. Also, a very nice tasting beer and brandy can be brewed from the persimmon.
- The wood of the American persimmon tree is very hard and can be used for construction, making tools, or just about anything else; in the past it has been used to make hardy items like golf clubs, and Indians used them to make wooden equipment.
