● Chinese chestnut trees are blight resistant and easy to grow. The main purpose of growing the Chinese chestnut is for wildlife and fresh eating, as the shelf life can be limited.
If you are looking to store for a long time, you can store them for up to one year if you immediately dry them in the oven after harvesting, but before you can use them again they will need to be rehydrated. Deer and squirrels will be the main wildlife attracted to the fresh healthy nuts of the Chinese chestnut; this is the true reason to plant them. Planting trees to attract wildlife is invaluable when it comes to having access to fresh meat, especially at a time when food or meat would be hard to come by. You could also use the surplus of these highly valued nuts as a form of currency with which to barter. Growing Chinese chestnuts is easy and overall it’s an inexpensive food source for your survival garden.

Description
● Chinese chestnut trees thrive in USDA zones 4 through 9, excelling in high heat conditions, and are resistant to chestnut blight. At maturity the maximum size is approximately 40 to 60 feet tall with a 50 foot spread. You should plant more than one Chinese chestnut at a time to ensure pollination requirements are met; preferably plant three at one location. You will be able to harvest the chestnuts in September through October, or hunt your meat for the winter months in colder states. You would also be able to harvest the chestnut tree’s wood, which is great for construction purposes and is rot resistant. The ideal planting location would be in full sun in well-drained soils, but this nut tree is very adaptive and will grow in a wide variety of locations. You should plant the Chinese chestnut as a Prepper investment for its wildlife-attracting qualities, and let the human consumption of the chestnut and harvesting of the wood be added bonuses.
