● The leatherleaf mahonia shrub is great for growing in a shady location in USDA zones 6 through 9. The leaves are extremely thick and have sharp needle-like spines, which provide protection. A beautiful yellow flower stalk shoots up in late winter or early spring, followed by blueish-purple berries that form clusters and attract various types of wildlife. It is an upright-growing shrub that has multiple stalks and forms a massive clump, reaching a height of five to ten feet with a spread of three to four feet. You should plant the mahonia shrubs two feet apart if trying to hide something or if using it as a property line protector. Site location is in part shade to full shade as it will not take full sun. It is drought tolerant and very adaptable to soil conditions, so clay, sand, loam, acidic, or alkaline are all just fine.
