● Elderberry plants grow to an average height of between 10 and 12 feet and are hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, making them a widely adaptable plant for Preppers everywhere. Pollination is not absolutely necessary to set berries on the bushes but, if pollinated, elderberry plants will produce more berries, which can be used for pies, teas, wines, jellies, and jams. The fruit becomes ripe between August and September, with 12 to 15 pounds of elderberry fruit produced from a mature bush. For the best results, plant six to ten feet apart in full sun to part shade in an area that receives adequate moisture. Eating the berries fresh is not recommended, but, after cooking, the syrup can be made into many sweet treats. Elderberry plants are great for Preppers as the syrup can be made into food for eating purposes and is also medicinal—perfect for the end times.
