Silver Maple - Acer saccharum

● The silver maple tree, Acer saccharinum, was used by the Mohegans as a cough remedy, a treatment for diarrhea, and as a blood purifier, by making a tea from the tree’s inner bark.
The inner bark, known as the cambium layer, should be harvested from limbs or twigs that have fallen to the ground, rather than from the tree itself. This can be done by stripping the bark off the twig with a sharp knife and using the green inside bark; you can dry this bark out and store to use at a later time.

● Silver maple trees are fast-growing shade trees that can grow in the heat and tolerate the cold, being suitable for USDA zones 3 through 9. The mature height is 50 to 80 feet and they prefer being planted in full sun but can tolerate shade as well. The soil conditions are nothing to worry about as silver maples are adaptable to many different soil conditions; they are natively found near rivers and streams. The sap of the silver maple can also be harvested to make your own maple syrup. To do so, harvest the sap from the trunk when the sap starts moving from the roots to the canopy in late winter–early spring. Harvest a silver maple tree that is at least ten inches in diameter; drill up three holes at one foot up, and collect the rich sugary sap. Boil it down to make your syrup when the grocery stores are no more.
